Jamie Carragher believes that for the greatest Liverpool player it is a toss up between Steven Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish.

Gerrard played his last game for the Reds against Stoke City last weekend. His Liverpool career spanned 17 seasons with the first team and he went on to make 710 appearances, scoring 186 goals in the process.

Dalglish’s Liverpool career spanned from 1977 until his retirement in 1990 and through the course of his illustrious career, the Scotsman won a hatful of trophies, including three European Cups and six league titles.

Carragher, a long-time contemporary of Gerrard, feels that the 34-year-old counts amongst the greatest Liverpool players.

"He's right up there at the top”, the former defender told BBC Radio Merseyside when asked about Gerrad’s place in the pantheon of Liverpool greats.

"There's always a toss up between him and Kenny Dalglish. There's no doubt the opinion will be split down the middle and you couldn't argue either way.”

The outgoing Liverpool captain will be joining forces with MLS outfit LA Galaxy and Carragher feels it will be difficult for the Merseyside outfit to replace Gerrard.

"Liverpool have lost great players before and great players will come again. A player as good as Stevie? It's almost impossible to replace that. Steven is the type of player that only comes around every 30 years.”
