Manchester United have contacted Bayern Munich for the transfer of Brazilian defender Dante, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato.

Though the Brazilian has not been a nailed down starter for Bayern Munich this season, he played a crucial role in their Bundesliga triumph.

However, at 31, the defender is on the wrong side of 30 and it has been speculated that Pep Guardiola wants to revamp Bayern Munich's rearguard, which has led to rumours that Dante is available in the market this summer.

Louis van Gaal wants to add an experienced defender to Manchester United’s ranks at the end of the season and though Mats Hummel remains their priority, the Dutchman is looking at other options.

The 31-year-old Dante has emerged as one of their targets and it has been claimed that that Manchester United have already initiated contact with the German champions for the defender.

If Bayern Munich are willing to sell, Manchester United may well be confident of closing out the deal for Dante if they decide to take the next step in the transfer saga.

The Red Devils also chased Dante last year, when David Moyes was at the helm.

Dante has clocked up 39 appearances in all competitions for the Bavarians this season and has also earned 14 caps for Brazil.
