Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has said that the club faithful still thank him for his performance in the 2008 Champions League final against Chelsea that secured the Red Devils their third European Cup.

In a match that was ultimately decided on penalties, Van der Sar stopped a spot-kick from Nicolas Anelka to secure the trophy for Manchester United.

It was Dutchman’s second European Cup triumph, having won the competition with Ajax Amsterdam in the 1994/95 season and he says that he has fond memories of the victories, adding that Manchester United fans still show their gratitude for his performance in the 2008 final.

“Whenever someone mentions the Champions League, it’s hard to think of anything other than the ones I won in 1995 and 2008”, he told the club website.
