Memphis Depay has emphasised the importance of his relationship with Louis van Gaal, but says the Dutch manager did not have to tell him just how big a club Manchester United are.

Manchester United have agreed a deal with PSV Eindhoven for Depay, who has thrashed out a contract with the Red Devils and passed his medical; he cannot officially put pen to paper until June however, meaning at present he remains a PSV player.

It is an odd situation, he admitted to Dutch daily Metro: "I still can't sign my contract at United until the transfer market opens.

"I'm actually still at PSV. It is a special situation because I've still not been officially presented."

The Netherlands international winger, who played under Van Gaal at international level, says the current Manchester United boss did not have to tell him the size of the club he is joining.

"They have paid enough for me.

"Van Gaal is important to me. We know each other well and we had a great conversation.

"He didn't have to explain to me what sort of club United are. They are one of the biggest clubs in the world."

And Depay is keen to hit the ground running at Old Trafford to repay Manchester United's faith in splashing out a fee which could reach €32m depending on performances to sign him from PSV.

"They've paid quite a bit for me.

"I want to start right and I feel ready for that."
