Javier Hernandez is set to return to Manchester United after Real Madrid decided against taking up the option to sign him on a permanent deal.

The Mexican international joined the Spanish giants last summer on a season-long loan deal but failed to make his mark at the Bernabeu this season.

Warming the bench for most of the time, Hernandez was afforded very few opportunities to impress and though he finished the season in a flourish, it was too little too late from the Mexican.

Real Madrid have reached the conclusion that Hernandez did very little to deserve a permanent deal and the club have decided to send him back to Manchester United, according to Madrid-based daily Marca.

The Mexican is expected to be on the lookout for a new club this summer as he is not believed to be in Louis van Gaal’s plans for the new season and Manchester United are expected to make him available in the transfer market.

He made just 12 starts for Real Madrid this season and scored nine goals in the process.

Hernandez's lack of regular first team football this season also cost him a place in Mexico’s 23-man squad for this summer’s Copa America.
