Reflecting upon Liverpool’s last league campaign, former Reds’ forward Luis Suarez has said that the players wanted to win the title for Steven Gerrard, while dubbing the midfielder's failure to ever win the Premier League "strange".

Liverpool came within a whisker of clinching the league title last season. Heading into the last three league games of the season, the Reds were three points ahead of Manchester City, but Brendan Rodgers’ men failed to get a point off Chelsea in week 36 and eventually finished two points short of the Citizens.

Suarez was the driving force behind Liverpool’s title challenge with his 31 goals and 21 assists and he departed to Barcelona last summer.

The Uruguay international has fond memories of the campaign and has revealed that the Reds were eager to hand Gerrard, who will be leaving Anfield this summer for Los Angeles Galaxy, his first league title.

"Last season was brilliant”, the 28-year-old was quoted as saying by the Liverpool website.

"We tried our best to help Liverpool get back into the Champions League and also when we had a really good chance to win the Premier League it was for Stevie.

"Because he played in England for many years and never won the league – it's a little strange.

"He needed to win it and when we lost the title, it was sad for us and for him.
