Former West Ham striker John Hartson feels that the supporters at Upton Park want a manager who prefers to play exciting football.

The Hammers parted ways with their manager for the last four seasons, Sam Allardyce, after a 2-0 loss to Newcastle United on the final day of the season.

And as the club look for a replacement for the 60-year-old manager, with a number of names doing the rounds, the former striker feels that it would be great for his former side to bring in a manager who prefers to play "exciting" football.

According to Hartson, the Upton Park faithful respect the job that Allardyce has been doing for the last four seasons, but haven't been happy with certain elements of the veteran manager's style.

That is why Hartson hopes that this time around the club find someone that likes to play out from the back.

“I played in front of the West Ham fans for two years and they are terrific supporters”, Hartson told West Ham's official website.

“I just feel that they respect the job Sam has done but they were not very happy with certain elements of Sam Allardyce being in charge.

“The man they want is a manager who is going to play exciting football, a manager that likes to play out from the back."

Another former Hammers player Slaven Bilic has been strongly linked with the task of taking over at Upton Park after he confirmed an exit from Besiktas at the end of the season.
