Liverpool have been given encouragement if they wish to move for Jurgen Klopp to replace the under-fire Brendan Rodgers this summer.

Rodgers' position is now under intense scrutiny after he could only lead Liverpool to sixth in the Premier League, along with failing to win any cup competitions, despite spending over £100m on new players last summer. The Reds also slipped out of the Champions League at the group stage, with Rodgers famously fielding a second string team away at Real Madrid.

His spending spree, combined with him telling Spurs when spending a similar amount they should be challenging for the Premier League title – "Look at Tottenham. If you spend more than £100m, you expect to be challenging for the league", he said – have now come back to haunt him.

Klopp, who is bidding farewell to his job at Borussia Dortmund following this weekend's German Cup final against Wolfsburg, has been mooted as a possible contender to succeed Rodgers at Anfield.

It had been claimed that Klopp is planning to take time off and not jump straight back into management.

However, while that remains the 47-year-old's preferred course of action, he could be tempted to change his mind if an English club come calling in the summer, according to German daily Bild.

Klopp is a firm fan of the English game and is alive to the possibility of managing in the Premier League.

The development may be hungrily digested by Liverpool's American owners, if they are thinking of parting ways with Rodgers and making a move for Klopp, who has two Bundesliga titles to his name.

He also led Borussia Dortmund to the Champions League final in 2013.
