Liverpool have contacted Carlo Ancelotti to discuss the possibility of him replacing Brendan Rodgers in the Anfield dugout this summer, according to Madrid-based daily Marca.

A sixth place finish coupled with a humiliating final day defeat at Stoke City have ramped up the pressure on Rodgers, who is believed to be feeling the heat as Liverpool manager at the moment.

The Northern Irishman is expected to travel to Boston soon to meet the owners for an end of season review and though it is believed his job is not under threat, there is speculation that the team’s capitulation at Stoke has altered the thinking behind the corridors of power at Liverpool.

It has been claimed that the Liverpool hierarchy have sounded out Ancelotti, who was sacked at Real Madrid on Monday, as a possible replacement for Rodgers at Anfield, if they choose to change course.

There are rumours that the Italian is planning a year-long sabbatical from football management but it has been claimed that Liverpool’s approach is making him think twice about taking a break.

Ancelotti is seriously considering Liverpool’s approach and though AC Milan are currently working hard to convince him to return to the San Siro, he would only consider giving up on his idea of taking a sabbatical if the Reds are serious about recruiting him this summer.

West Ham have also contacted Ancelotti for their manager’s role, but Liverpool are believed to be the only serious contenders for his signature.
