Louis van Gaal has stressed that Manchester United’s ability to compete for trophies next season will be dependent on buying a few quality players in the summer.

Getting Manchester United back into the Champions League was believed to be Van Gaal’s goal for this term and a fourth place finish has guaranteed European football at Old Trafford next season.




However, the expectations are set to rise for the new campaign and Van Gaal admits that the Manchester United hierarchy expect him to deliver trophies next season.

But the Dutchman feels that his squad still lacks the balance to compete for trophies and stressed a solid summer transfer window is essential to make Manchester United capable of going for the big prizes on offer next term.
 


“The board of Manchester United shall say now we have to battle for the championship!” Van Gaal told MUTV.

“I think it’s a fantastic challenge but it is also dependable on how we can purchase good players and how we can improve the balance in our squad.

“When you see against Arsenal what I had to do, I had to put players in positions that they never play. That's a pity because the balance in our selection was not good.

"You need two players for every position.”

The former Ajax boss insisted that winning trophies remains a burning ambition for him and the club and stressed he is eager to build a championship winning Manchester United team for the fans.

“But the board brought me here to win titles. I want to win titles for the fans but also for myself. The biggest challenge is what your ambition is, and my ambition is to win titles.

“It is not easy, everybody knows that and we shall fight till the end and I will give everything in me to build a team as champions.”

Manchester United have already signed Dutch winger Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven in a deal worth £23m and are expected to spend heavily again this summer to further strengthen the squad.
