Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal feels that appointing Wayne Rooney as the club captain at the start of the season has turned out to be a good decision.

A number of players, including Darren Fletcher, who left the club in January, skippered the Manchester United side during their pre-season tour of the US last summer as Van Gaal tested his players in his early days as their manager.

However, at the start of the season the Dutchman appointed Rooney as the club’s captain and soon the England manager also announced him as the skipper of the national team.

The Manchester United boss revealed that the England striker is an accommodating captain who always leads by example on the pitch.

Though he conceded that sometimes Rooney loses control over his aggression, the Dutchman believes the forward has evolved into a good leader and feels he made a good decision at the start of the season to appoint him as the club skipper.

“He is a democratic leader, he is not a dictator”, Van Gaal told MUTV.

“I like democratic leadership. He is always setting an example for the other players and maybe Wayne is the example for the team’s fighting spirit.

“Sometimes he can cross the limits but when you review his season you can say that he is a controlled captain. He will always argue with the referee but he did it at the right moment in a positive way.

“So I think after one season I can say I made the right decision to make him our captain. I am very happy with him.”

Rooney finished the season as the club’s top goalscorer with 14 strikes in all competitions.
