Mauro Bousquet, who represented Brazilian youngster Adryan in Italy, believes that the midfielder underestimated the difficulty of Italian and English football.

Adryan initially joined Italian outfit Cagliari on loan from Flamengo, but then switched last summer to Leeds United on a similar loan agreement, arriving at Elland Road amid much hype and expectation.

He struggled to make his mark at both clubs and is now expected to return to parent side Flamengo, with Leeds not activating an option to sign him permanently.

For Bousquet, Adryan arrived in Europe believing as he had excelled for Brazil at youth level he would quickly be able to turn on the style on a new continent. And he underestimated the English and Italian game.

The Italian told Tutto Mercato: "Certainly we expected more from the perspective of mental adaptation to European football.

"He was a leader in the youth teams in Brazil and perhaps thought he could impose himself easily in Italy and England."

However, despite Adryan not hitting the heights expected, Bousquet is not ready to rule out a return to Europe for his client, with an EU passport opening a number of doors.

"He has another 18 months on his contract with Flamengo, but I can't rule out him returning to Europe.

"Moreover, having a European Union passport means he is available in the market anywhere."
