Arsenal defender Mathieu Debuchy has said that his team are keen to retain the FA Cup they won last season, when they face Aston Villa in the final this weekend.

Debuchy arrived at the Emirates Stadium from Newcastle United at the start of the current season, but his inaugural season with the Gunners has been disrupted by injuries.

The France international made his comeback against Reading in the semi-final of the FA Cup last month, having recovered after dislocating his shoulder in January.

Reflecting upon the semi-final win, Debuchy has said that it was an important match for the club and the players as they attempt to retain the trophy they won last year after defeating Hull City in the final at Wembley.

“It was a very important match for the club and for the players as well, we really wanted to reach the final, to have the opportunity to win the cup again”, the Frenchman told Arsenal Player.

“Personally, I was coming back from injury and to play 120 minutes was extremely hard, especially in extra time.

“I struggled a bit but the most important thing was to reach the final for the second year in a row.

“We want to keep the trophy.”

Injuries have reduced Debuchy to only 15 appearances in all competitions this season.

Arsenal ended their league campaign in third and have qualified directly for the group stage of the Champions League as a result.
