Spanish La Liga outfit Athletic Bilbao are keen on acquiring Arsenal left-back Nacho Monreal in the summer, according to AS.

Monreal’s existing contract is set to expire in June 2016 and Arsenal are averse to offering a fresh deal with a substantial wage hike, as the player demands.

The left-back joined the Emirates Stadium-based outfit in January 2013 from La Liga side Malaga. He has also played for Basque club Osasuna and is a graduate of their youth academy.

This season Monreal has made 38 appearances in all competitions and has contributed one goal and two assists to help Arsenal attain third spot in the league and reach the final of the FA Cup.

He is facing competition from 25-year-old England international Kieran Gibbs at Arsenal.

Arsenal, it has been claimed, may be willing to accept an offer below the €10m they paid Malaga to acquire the 29-year-old.

After finishing in seventh, Athletic Bilbao missed the cut for the Champions League, but they will compete in the Europa League next season.
