Inter are looking at selling midfielder Mateo Kovacic to Liverpool in order to bankroll a bid for Medhi Benatia after being quoted €22m for the centre-back by Bayern Munich.

Nerazzurri boss Roberto Mancini is desperate to bolster his defence ahead of next season and has set his sights on Benatia, whose stock in Italy is still sky high following a spell with Roma.

However, affording the Morocco international is set to be tough for Inter, forcing them to be creative when it comes to looking at how to raise the money.

And so, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter are considering selling Kovacic to Liverpool and then putting the funds to use in their pursuit of Benatia.

Liverpool are chasing Kovacic, but have seen their initial attempts to sign the Croatia international meet with no success.

However, now Inter could be all ears to a substantial offer from the Reds as they look to bring in funds to buy Benatia.

The 28-year-old defender first landed in Italy in 2010 when snapped up by Udinese from French outfit Clermont.

He moved on to Roma in 2013 before signing for Bayern Munich just a year later.
