Wolfsburg playmaker Kevin De Bruyne has beaten off competition from Chelsea forward Eden Hazard to win Belgium’s Foreign-Based Player of the Year award.

Hazard was voted the Player of the Year in England for starring in Chelsea’s league winning campaign but has been ignored for the top prize in his homeland.

A jury which included Liverpool's Champions League hero Jerzy Dudek, ex-Reds striker Ronny Rosenthal, Denmark coach Morten Olsen and former Chelsea sporting director Frank Arnesen, amongst others, have voted Wolfsburg’s rising star De Bruyne as the country’s best player playing abroad.

The 23-year-old former Chelsea man has been Wolfsburg’s star performer this season and with 28 assists and 15 goals in 50 appearances in all competitions, De Bruyne is now one of the sought after playmaker’s in world football.

The Belgian played a key role in the Wolves finishing runners-up to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and has a golden opportunity to cap off his year with a trophy when he lines up for Wolfsburg in the German Cup final against Borussia Dortmund tomorrow.
