Wayne Rooney has said that it was important for Manchester United to finish among the top four after they missed out on Champions League qualification last season, adding that the Red Devils will be attempting to win all the competitions they compete in during the upcoming season.

The Premier League giants had endured a difficult campaign last term and eventually finished in seventh hereby missing on European qualification.

This season, under Louis van Gaal’s management, they are back amongst the European elite after finishing fourth in the league and Rooney has acknowledged that the regaining their spot in the Champions League was a must for his side after last season’s debacle.

“Top four was a must, really. We had to get ourselves back into the Champions League and we’ve managed to do that”, he told his club’s site in an interview.

“Hopefully that will provide a springboard for us to go and fight for silverware next year.”

“We haven’t discussed them yet. For now, we'll look forward to a good pre-season when I’m sure the manager will lay out what he wants from us.

“I think we have to try and win whatever competition that we’re in.

“It’s important that we push on and try to win whatever we're involved in.”
