Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes if Arsene Wenger shows ambition in the transfer window Arsenal could challenge for the league title next season.

Arsenal finished the season third behind champions Chelsea and Manchester City, but their form in the second half of their campaign earned praise from all quarters and many feel they might be able to launch a title charge next term.

The Liverpool legend admits that Arsenal are getting better and believes that their recent summer signings are showing the Gunners are on an upward trajectory as a club.

Lawrenson feels that if Wenger shows some ambition and makes some quality additions to his squad then there is no reason why Arsenal can’t be considered as serious title contenders for next season.

“The Gunners only finished third in the Premier League this season”, Lawrenson told the BBC.

“But they are getting better – they have improved since last year and Wenger has become more and more adventurous with his signings over the last 18 months or so.

“If he is as ambitious again with the players he brings in this summer, then they will be a lot closer to the title next season.”

Arsenal have not won the league title since their triumph in the 2003/04 invincible season and have finished runners-up just once since then.
