Valencia are sticking to their stance of not allowing Nicolas Otamendi to join Manchester United unless the Red Devils meet his €50m release clause, according to Valencia-based daily Super Deporte.

Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal is keen to take Otamendi to Old Trafford as he looks to strengthen his defensive options heading into a season in which Champions League football will be back on the agenda for the club.

Van Gaal has already seen Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels go cold on a potential move and now his attention is firmly on Otamendi.

It has been claimed that the Argentina international is interested in leaving the Mestalla for Old Trafford.

But Valencia are not willing to play ball with the Premier League giants and insist if Manchester United want Otamendi they must meet his €50m release clause.

While Manchester United spent over £150m on new players last summer, it remains doubtful whether they will be prepared to lavish £36.3m on the defender.

Otamendi joined Valencia from FC Porto in 2014 and has 19 caps for Argentina at international level to his name.
