Brondby have opted not to activate a purchase option contained in Holmbert Fridjonsson's loan deal, meaning the young striker will be returning to Scottish side Celtic.

Fridjonsson moved on a season-long loan to Brondby last summer from Celtic, along with another striker, Teemu Pukki, in an effort to play regular first team football.

But while Brondby are hoping to keep hold of Pukki by knocking down Celtic's asking price for the Finland international, they do not believe they can do Fridjonsson justice in terms of game time.

And so while they continue to rate the young Icelandic hitman as a promising talent, the club are returning him to Celtic.

Brondby's sporting director Per Rud said in a statement: "Holmbert has performed really well for us, both in training and in matches, and he has great potential.

"Realistically though, we believe that Holmbert will not receive enough playing time with us going forward, and we have therefore decided it is best for both parties not to activate the purchase option that lay in the loan."

Brondby currently sit third in the Danish Superliga and play their final match of the season this coming weekend when they entertain ninth placed Esbjerg.

The match will provide Fridjonsson with his Brondby farewell.
