Celtic defender Mikael Lustig has given a positive update on his injury as he has begun training outdoors following his recuperation sessions in the gym.

Lustig has been beset by injuries during his last two seasons at Celtic Park and he has been on the sidelines after he injured his ankle in a Scottish Cup clash against Dundee at Dens Park in February.

As a result, he missed out on the Hoops’ title run-in as they collected their fourth successive Premiership title. Ronny Deila’s men also won the League Cup after they defeated Dundee United 2-0 in the final at Hampden Park in March.

The Sweden international made only 16 appearances for the Bhoys this season as they ended their campaign with a domestic double. However, his treatment is progressing well and he will hope to be fully fit before the Hoops begin their title defence next season.

“I was out for a while before that so the whole season has been quite bad for me. Every time I get injured I always promise myself to not do it again but this could happen to anyone”, Lustig told Celtic View.

“Now the last couple of weeks I feel like I’m finally progressing. I’ve been outside running and been involved in some passing exercises so hopefully I can be ready for the pre-season.

“It’s really refreshing to get back outside and train.

“It’s really hard to just be in the gym just doing the bike for three months – that’s not much fun and it takes a certain mental strength.”
