Sampdoria president Massimo Ferrero has seemingly ruled out a summer move for Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli, despite having consistently eyed the Italian, saying that he is aiming higher than the Reds star.

Balotelli joined the Reds last summer from Italian Serie A giants AC Milan, but he has found the going tough at Anfield.

In his first season with the Merseyside giants, the striker has netted only four times from his 28 appearances in all competitions.

The 24-year-old’s contract with the Reds last until the summer of 2018, but his poor performances have made the club hierarchy assess their options and they are thought to be contemplating shipping out the forward.

Sampdoria were reported to be interested in Balotelli as they attempt to improve upon their seventh place finish this season and bolster their squad for the 2015/16 campaign.

However, club president Ferrero has said that he is aiming to bring in someone with a bigger stature than the Italy international.

“Balotelli? Meh….who knows”, he said on Radio 24.

“I want more.

“I want to surprise you."
