Leeds United have rekindled their interest in Uruguay international full-back Alvaro Pereira, a player they made an audacious attempt to sign earlier this year.

Pereira chose to join Argentine outfit Estudiantes in January, joining on loan from Italian giants Inter. The deal contained a purchase option for the Argentine side, set at around €3m, but they are not activating it and he is returning to Italy.

Pereira's potential availability has again alerted Leeds owner Massimo Cellino, who is desperate to take the former Europa League winner to Elland Road, while Turkish giants Galatasaray have also made a move for the full-back, according to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport.

Pereira, who turned out at FC Porto under Andre Villas-Boas and won two Portuguese league titles, two Portuguese Cups and one Europa League with the Dragons, is expected to be in demand.

Indeed, his agent detailed a whole host of clubs who tried to sign his client before he moved to Estudiantes, a switch thought to have been motivated by personal reasons.

"Who else tried for him? There were many other clubs involved: Leeds, Dynamo Kyiv, Boca [Juniors], River [Plate] and Palmeiras", Alfredo Regueira said at the time.

Pereira, who is still just 29 years old, has won 66 caps at international level for Uruguay and played at last summer's World Cup.
