Talking about his recent contract renewal, Barcelona right-back Dani Alves has revealed that Lionel Messi advised him to stay put at the club.

Alves has enjoyed seven trophy-laden years at the Camp Nou since he joined the Catalan outfit in the summer of 2008 from Sevilla. His trophy haul includes three Champions Leagues, five league titles and three Copa del Reys.

The Brazil international’s contract was set to expire at the end of this month and he had refused to ink a new deal, increasing speculation about his future at the Camp Nou.

However, yesterday he penned a new two-year deal to prolong his stay with the Catalan outfit thereby extending his tenure at the club to a possible nine years.

Alves has enjoyed a great understanding with team’s talisman Messi and the Brazilian has provided more assists for the Argentine than any other player at the club. And the 32-year-old has revealed that the diminutive forward convinced him to stay at the Camp Nou.

“He [Messi] told me ‘Dani, stay – where are you going to be better than here?”, the defender was quoted as saying by AS.
