Croatia coach Niko Kovac has appeared to wade into the transfer saga surrounding Inter midfielder Mateo Kovacic to offer backing for a move to Liverpool.

The Reds are keen on snapping up Kovacic from Inter, but have been unable to so far reach an agreement with the Nerazzurri.

Kovacic for his part has said he is happy to stay put at a side which finished eighth in Serie A this season, while Inter coach Roberto Mancini also stated his belief that the midfielder would remain at the San Siro.

Kovac however appears to want Kovacic playing at the highest level possible and admits he would be happy if the midfielder joined another "important club".

Asked about Kovacic at a press conference, Kovac was quoted as saying by FC Inter News: "His future? I don't know.

"But if he went to play for another important club I would be happy for him."

Kovac, who took charge of Croatia in 2013, considers Kovacic a key man in the international set-up.

Despite being just 21 years old, Kovacic has already accumulated 20 caps for his country and turned out at last summer's World Cup in Brazil.
