New Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren has already spoken with Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost about a transfer to the north east of England this summer.

Struggling to break into the Wolfsburg first eleven during the first half of the season, Dost took the Bundesliga by storm after the winter break and scored 14 of his 16 league goals of the campaign.

However, the relationship between the club and the player has not been the smoothest and the Dutchman has claimed that he is thinking about making a move away from the Volkswagen Arena this summer.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman is said to be keen to take the prolific forward to the St. Mary’s before the start of the new season but they are going to face stiff competition from Newcastle, who have already made their move for the striker through their new boss.

According to the Algemeen Dagblad, McClaren, who was appointed Newcastle manager yesterday, held initial conversation with the player earlier this week to attract him to St. James’ Park this summer.

The former England manager is expected to receive considerable transfer funds this summer to rebuild the squad and pull Newcastle out of their recent slump.

And Dost is believed to be an important target for McClaren who is looking to add more attacking flair to a team which scored 40 league goals this season.
