Lyon's chances of signing Jason Denayer on loan from Manchester City have receded after the player's agent declared the English side believe he can challenge for a first team spot next term.

Denayer spent last season on loan at Scottish champions Celtic, but has headed back to Manchester City. The Bhoys had been keen to keep him at Celtic Park, however the Belgium international wants to test himself in a bigger league.

Lyon spied a chance to take him to France, but their hopes have been dealt a big blow by Denayer's agent, who has suggested Manchester City are keen to keep hold of his client.

"The management of Manchester City said they believe that Jason is a potential player for the first team next season", the agent was quoted as saying by Belgian daily Derniere Heure.

"We are in the middle of negotiations over an extension", he added.
