Rangers assistant manager David Weir has revealed that Danny Wilson’s desire to return to his former club was the key factor in his transfer.

Wilson, who captained Hearts to Championship glory last season, has returned to the club where he started his professional career and Weir believes his keenness to come back was the influential factor in the transfer.

In an interview with Rangers TV, Weir opened up on the thought process that goes into finding players and signing them at the Ibrox club.

“We all talk about players, pass on our experiences, our views on them. Ultimately Mark [Warburton] is the manager, he makes the decisions.”

Although Warburton’s decision is the key, Weir believes that in Wilson’s case, a big part was played by the player himself, who drove the move with his desire to rejoin the Light Blues.

“A big part of it was Danny as well. The fact he made it obvious how keen he was to come here and that was really important to us as well”, added the former defender.

The 45-year-old feels that Wilson’s familiarity with the club helped the Gers in making a move for the Scotland international.

“We know his qualities, we know him as a player, we know him as a person so it genuinely was a good deal for everyone.”

23-year-old Wilson, who became Warburton’s first signing as Rangers manager, will be expected to lead his new club to the Scottish Premiership.

He played 33 times for Hearts in 2014/15, scoring five goals as he led them to promotion.
