Ron Vlaar says he has no idea whether Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal wants him at Old Trafford and he has not been contacted by the Red Devils.

The Netherlands international defender is out of contract with current club Aston Villa this summer, though he has been offered a new deal to remain at Villa Park.

Vlaar has consistently been linked with Manchester United and would be a free transfer signing for the Red Devils, but he is in the dark over whether Van Gaal wants him.

"I have often heard about and read the rumours", the defender told ELF Voetbal, when asked about Manchester United chatter.

"But there has never been contact", he continued.

"I think he [Van Gaal] knows what he wants and what he does not want.

"Whether I am part of his plans I dare not say. I have no idea."

Vlaar is a firm fan of Premier League football and has been tipped to stay in England. He does however admit that he is intrigued by the Bundesliga, more so than Spain's La Liga or Italy's Serie A.

"I think the Bundesliga is also a great competition", the centre-back explained.

"I think German football suits me more than Spanish or Italian. Although, Stefan de Vrij [at Lazio] has shown that Dutch players can handle Serie A."

The defender helped Aston Villa survive in the Premier League last season and also reach the final of the FA Cup.
