Arsenal and AC Milan linked Jackson Martinez has confirmed that he is on his way to Atletico Madrid this summer.

While his departure from FC Porto this summer was on the cards, there was furious speculation surrounding his eventual destination as a number of top clubs were vying for his signature.

Arsenal held a long term interest in the player but were said to have been put off by his €35m release clause. AC Milan meanwhile are the ones who were on the cusp of signing the player.

There was speculation that a deal was on the cards and even the Porto president announced that Martinez had chosen the Rossoneri as his next destination.

However, a late twist in the tale saw Atletico Madrid leapfrog AC Milan for the 28-year-old forward and his agent confirmed earlier in the week that his client will join the Spanish giants.

Following Colombia’s exit from the Copa America last night, Martinez himself confirmed that he will join Atletico Madrid and said that he is looking forward to a fresh challenge in his career.

“It’s a fact, I can confirm that everything is ready”, Martinez was quoted as saying by Marca.

“For now, I’ll enjoy with my family and then travel to Spain to introduce myself at my new club.

“I am extremely excited about joining Atletico, it’s a new challenge in my career and I hope thing go well from here.”

Martinez scored 92 goals in 133 appearances for Porto and won a league title with the club in the 2012/13 season.
