Liverpool had stitched up a deal for Benfica winger Eduardo Salvio, which would have kicked in this summer, but have now postponed the move until January, it has been claimed.

The Reds, who are firm fans of the Argentine winger, were ready to pay Benfica a sum of €35m to take Salvio to Anfield this summer.

However, in the last game of the Portuguese Primeira Liga season, Salvio injured his knee and as a result the deal was called off.

But according to Portuguese daily Diario de Noticias, Liverpool still want the 24-year-old and have signalled they will revisit the transfer in the winter transfer window next year.

By that time Salvio should have returned to action for Benfica, or at the very least be close to doing so.

Salvio joined Benfica, initially on loan, from Atletico Madrid in 2010.

A product of Argentine club Lanus' youth academy, he was snapped up by Atletico Madrid in January 2010.

Last season Salvio made a total of 38 appearances in all competitions for Benfica, scoring 13 goals and providing his team-mates with eleven assists.
