Tottenham Hotspur are in advanced negotiations with Atletico Madrid for the signature of Chelsea linked Toby Alderweireld.

Los Colchoneros are keen to have him back in Spain for next season, but the Belgian is reluctant and wants to stay in England after spending the last campaign on loan at Southampton.

Ronald Koeman wants to sign Alderweireld on a permanent deal but is facing stiff competition from other Premier League clubs for his signature.

Chelsea have shown a liking for the defender and Jose Mourinho is said to be interested in signing him, however, Tottenham are believed to be on the ones leading the chase for the 26-year-old Belgian.

According to Spanish daily AS, Spurs are in advanced negotiations with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of Alderweireld and are confident of beating Chelsea and Southampton to his signature.

While Atletico Madrid are still trying to convince Alderweireld to return to Spain, the defender feels that he is not going to play regular football at the Vicente Calderon in the presence of Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez in the squad.

Therefore, the defender is expected to continue in England beyond the summer and Tottenham are increasingly looking like his next destination.

He is also an established international for Belgium and has earned 48 caps for the Red Devils.
