Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates is closing in on a Sunderland switch, according to the Press Association.

The defender was on loan at the Stadium of Light last season and made 13 appearances in all competitions as Sunderland narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship.

The Uruguay international has a year to run on his Anfield contract and the club are eager to offload him this summer.

Coates is close to a £2m move to Dick Advocaat’s side as he bids to strengthen his team for the coming season.

The 24-year-old joined the Reds in the summer of 2011, but he has failed to make his mark at Anfield and spent loan spell with Nacional apart from Sunderland.
