Bayern Munich have been linked with a move for Arsenal midfield target William Carvalho this summer.

The 23-year-old midfielder has been heavily linked with a move away from Sporting Lisbon since last summer and his performances in the European Under-21 Championship have heightened the speculation surrounding his future.

Arsenal have a long term interest in the player and have been exploring options to take him to north London as Arsene Wenger looks to add more steel to his midfield.

However, the Gunners are now set to face an uphill task in signing the midfielder as according to Portuguese daily Correio de Manha, Bayern Munich are showing keen interest in the player.

William is believed to have caught the attention of the Bayern Munich hierarchy in the 5-0 demolition job that Portugal carried out against Germany in the European Under-21 Championship semi-final recently.

With Xabi Alonso approaching the twilight of his career and Bastian Schweinsteiger linked with a move to Manchester United, the Bavarians want to add a fresh face to their midfield and William has emerged as a viable option.

However, his €45m release clause is said to be the main bone of contention as Sporting Lisbon have long been public in their view that they will not sell the player if his suitors refuse to pay the full figure.

William has earned ten caps for Portugal, including two apperances in last summer’s World Cup.
