Manchester United are set to increase their offer for Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos to a figure in excess of €60m, it has been claimed in Spain.

Last night it was reported in England that the Red Devils had lodged a €40m bid with Los Blancos for the defender, who wants to quit the Bernabeu for Old Trafford due to a contract wrangle.

But it appears Real Madrid will not play ball, something which is leading to Louis van Gaal's men increasing their bid for Ramos, with an eye on taking advantage of the present high exchange rate between the pound and the euro.

Indeed, according to Spanish TV programme El Chiringuito, the English giants are currently putting the finishing touches to a new offer, which will come in at over the €60m mark; Real Madrid president Florentino Perez continues to value Ramos at €100m.

Regardless of the president's stance, Manchester United are getting serious about their interest in Ramos and spy a genuine opportunity to sign the Spain international this summer.

Van Gaal is keen to sign a new centre-back in the transfer window, but has received scant encouragement from Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels.

Ramos would be a welcome addition for the Red Devils, as they seek to build a side capable of challenging for the Premier League title next season and competing in the Champions League.

Real Madrid boss Rafael Benitez however remains keen to keep Ramos at the Bernabeu if possible.
