Rangers defender Darren McGregor believes the new arrivals at the club will motivate him to work harder.

The Gers have signed centre-backs Danny Wilson and Rob Kiernan in the close season, the only players to arrive at Ibrox so far.

McGregor, who was the Gers’ Player of the Year last season, feels competition is normal at a big club like Rangers.

“You cannot complain at a club like Rangers where it is expected to bring in good players in all positions. So I can’t be sitting here and be grumbling”, said the 29-year-old to Rangers TV.

“It’s great that there is competition and that brings out the best in you.”

Being a centre-back himself, McGregor feels his place in the team is under threat from the new arrivals, but has vowed to give his best to keep his manager thinking.

“I’ll do what I have always done. I’ll work hard, I’ll stay committed.

“It’s for me to go out there and do what I’ve always done and hopefully give the gaffer some food for thought.”

The Scot praised the qualities of Wilson and Kiernan and believes their presence will drive him to perform better and bring the best out of himself.

“They are obviously of a very high standard so if you are looking at them and they are performing well you know that you need to perform better and it’s tit for tat and that brings out the best in them.

“So it’s great for the competition and the squad because you know if you are not at it in training then you are not going to play”, he added.

McGregor was a first team regular for Rangers last season. He played 58 times in a marathon 2014/15 campaign for the Light Blues as they narrowly missed promotion to the Premiership.

They were beaten 6-1 on aggregate over two legs by Motherwell in the playoff final.
