Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has backed Liverpool's impending capture of full-back Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton.

Clyne was at Liverpool having a medical yesterday and is expected to be officially confirmed as a new Reds player when the transfer window swings open tomorrow.

Redknapp is a firm fan of the England defender and believes his capture is good business by Reds boss Brendan Rodgers.

The 68-year-old also revealed that while in charge at White Hart Lane he had the opportunity to sign Clyne for Spurs from Crystal Palace; the defender joined Southampton in 2012.

Redknapp took to social networking site Kicca to write: "Nathaniel Clyne to Liverpool is a great move, although it seems Liverpool only seem to buy Southampton players now!

"We could have had him at Spurs when he was at Palace.

"He took his game to another level at Southampton and I think that’s a great buy by Brendan."

Liverpool have been active in the summer transfer market so far, though most of their signings have come from other English clubs.

Goalkeeper Adam Bogdan has arrived from Bolton Wanderers, while defender Joe Gomez has been snapped up from Charlton Athletic.

The Reds are bagging midfielder James Milner from Manchester City and striker Danny Ings from Burnley.

Outside England they have signed Roberto Firmino from Hoffenheim.
