Everton have lodged an enquiry with Napoli for the transfer of Belgian winger Dries Mertens.

With Gerard Deulofeu already in the bag, Roberto Martinez wants to add more flair to his squad and is exploring various options in the market in order to fulfil his needs.

Napoli winger Mertens has emerged as a target for the Toffees and according to Belgian daily Het Laatste Nieuws, the club have registered an enquiry with the Italian club.

A left winger by choice, the 28-year-old can play on both flanks and is also versatile enough to play down the middle, a quality that is said to have impressed Everton boss Martinez.

With more than 51 appearances in all competitions last season, Mertens is a regular for Napoli and the club are said to be unwilling to sell him.

And with an iron clad contract that runs until 2018, the Italians are under no pressure to sell, therefore, the Toffees might have to come up with a substantial bid to prise him away from Napoli this summer.

However, Everton are yet to make any concrete offer for the player and are currently just exploring the idea of taking Mertens to England.

Mertens is also an established international and has earned 44 caps for Belgium.
