Bayern Munich sporting director Matthias Sammer has left the door ajar regarding Manchester United linked Bastian Schweinsteiger’s future at the club.

The Germany captain has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford as Louis van Gaal is reportedly keen to sign his former player to add nous to his midfield for next season.

The Bavarians have been maintaining that they will only sell the midfielder this summer if Schweinsteiger himself asks for a transfer.

Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola is confident of holding on to the player, but has conceded that the final decision rests with the veteran German international.

Club sporting director Sammer has revealed that the club are in constant touch with the 30-year-old and though he still is an important player for the Bavarians, he indicated that a transfer is not out of the question.

Sammer was quoted as saying by German daily Bild: “Bastian remains an important player for us and we are in touch with him.

“However, in principle I do agree that in a transfer period anything can happen.”

Schweinsteiger is keen to play more regular football next season ahead of next summer’s European Championship and the lure of being a certain starter at Old Trafford is believed to be one of the key reasons why his future in Bavaria remains unresolved.
