Sebastian Coates has officially moved from Liverpool to join Sunderland on a permanent basis and wasted no time in expressing his delight.

The Uruguayan, who was on loan at the Wearside club last season, has expressed his delight at becoming manager Dick Advocaat’s first signing of the summer.

“I’m really happy to be here”, he said to Sunderland’s official website.

The 24-year-old is looking to improve on the Black Cats’ 16th place finish in the Premier League last season when they narrowly avoided relegation.

“I will try to improve on last season and hopefully the team will too”, the defender added.

Coates joined Liverpool in 2011 but failed to cement his place in the Reds’ first team which led to him being farmed out on loan. He suffered two long-term injuries in the space of two seasons which affected his progress.

He joined Sunderland last summer on a season-long loan, but managed to make only ten appearances for the club. The Uruguayan hopes his permanent transfer to the Black Cats will result in more game time.

“I’m fit so I’m hoping to get more games”, he said.

“I will give my best in every training session to stay at my best for the games.”

Coates was part of the Uruguay side in the 2014 World Cup. He won the Copa America in 2011, and also bagged a League Cup winner’s medal with Liverpool in 2012.
