Former Leeds United assistant Steve Thompson says that the players at Elland Road were disappointed with how he was treated by the Whites.

Thompson linked up with then head coach Neil Redfearn at Leeds last season and helped to pull the Whites well clear of the Championship relegation zone, with a good run of results which at one point made the Yorkshire giants one of the most in-form teams in the division.

But he was suspended from his post towards the end of the campaign, much to Redfearn's shock, and Leeds' form nosedived.

The reasons for Thompson's suspension have never been clarified, but he has quickly bounced back and is now first team coach at Preston North End.

Asked by BBC Radio Leeds about stories coming out of Leeds about his departure, he replied that it was a "big disappointment with some of the stories coming out of Leeds.

"I can't say much but nothing's further from the truth that nothing happened over there."

And Thompson insists that the club's players, with whom he formed a close bond, were not impressed by the way he was treated by the Elland Road outfit.

Thompson, who is determined to move on with his career, said: "The players were very disappointed with how I was treated, but you move on."

The coach's new club Preston will come face to face with Leeds in the Championship next season and, in what could be a crunch fixture, take on the Whites on the final day of the campaign in May.
