Tottenham Hotspur have thrashed out a fee with Atletico Madrid for Belgium international defender Toby Alderweireld, according to Sky Italia.

Alderweireld spent last term on loan from Atletico Madrid at Southampton and impressed in the Premier League, leading the Saints to want to keep him on a permanent basis.

But it is Spurs who are clearly leading the chase for the former Ajax man and they have now had a bid for the centre-back accepted by Atletico Madrid.

The fee agreed will see Atletico Madrid receive €16m, plus between €1m and €2m in potential bonus payments.

Alderweireld still has to pass a medical at White Hart Lane and seal a switch to Spurs.

The news will be a disappointment to Southampton boss Ronald Koeman, who had been hoping to keep the defender at St. Mary's into next term.

It had also been floated that Alderweireld could be used by Atletico Madrid as part of a deal to sign Filipe Luis from Chelsea.

Now however it appears the defender will be playing for Spurs next season.
