New Liverpool assistant manager Sean O’Driscoll has expressed his excitement at joining his new club, pointing to Kenny the gateman as part of what can help make the Anfield outfit successful.

O’Driscoll’s appointment was made official by the Anfield outfit earlier today and the 58-year-old has taken little time in talking his new club up while expressing his delight and excitement at joining an “iconic” club.

"I am excited to be joining one of the world's most iconic football clubs”, he said to Liverpool’s official website.

“The hallmark of any successful club is its culture and that comes from the people who work there, from the chief executive and first-team manager to those people behind the scenes whose faces may not be known but who are the lifeblood of the club.”

The former England Under-19s manager believes the support staff at the club are as equally important as the players in the club’s success on the pitch, citing his recent experiences since arriving at Liverpool last week as examples.

"From the moment I drove into Melwood last week and was greeted by Kenny the gateman, I could not have been made to feel more welcome.

“If you are going to have any level of success these people are as crucial as the players; from my experiences so far it is clear everyone wants to help this club succeed", he added.

O’Driscoll replaces Colin Pascoe as manager Brendan Rodgers’ assistant. His appointment is part of an overhaul of the Reds’ first team backroom staff.

The former Republic of Ireland midfielder joins first team development coach Pepijn Lijnders as the new additions to Liverpool’s backroom staff.

He has previously managed Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest and Bristol City among others.
