Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren has set his sights on PSV Eindhoven captain Georginio Wijnaldum.

The 24-year-old attacking midfielder has been previously linked with a move to England, with Arsenal and Manchester United touted to be his suitors.

PSV are aware of the interest that their skipper has been generating and are said to have slapped a €20m asking price on the Feyenoord academy product.

McClaren has been a long term admirer of the Dutch international and wanted to sign the Dutchman while he was FC Twente manager.

The former England boss is now said to be desperate to sign him this summer and according to Dutch daily De Telegraaf, the Magpies are expected to place a serious offer on PSV’s table for Wijnaldum this week.

PSV are claimed to have already rejected a bid of around €10m from Zenit St. Petersburg for the 24-year-old, who still has three years left on his contract with the club.

The Dutchman made 44 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring 18 goals and providing six assists for his team-mates at PSV.

McClaren has been tasked with the job of reviving Newcastle United’s fortunes after the club narrowly avoided relegation last season and he wants Wijnaldum to become a centrepiece of his new look side next term.
