Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld is expected to travel to London today for a medical at Tottenham Hotspur.

It was reported yesterday that the north London club have reached an agreement with the Spanish giants for the transfer of the Belgian defender.

Alderweireld spent last season on loan at Southampton and Saints boss Ronald Koeman is keen to see the defender stay at the south coast club.

However, Spurs have moved in quickly to agree a fee €16m fee with Atletico Madrid for the signature of the defender and the deal is expected to take another step towards completion today.

According to Belgian daily Het Laatste Nieuws, the 26-year-old Belgian is set to travel to London today and undergo a medical at Tottenham before signing a contract with the club.

Alderweireld is expected to sign a five-year contract with Spurs and is set to become the fourth Belgian in Tottenham’s first team squad after Jan Vertonghen, Nacer Chadli and Moussa Dembele.

However, the transfer saga is expected to take another turn in the next few days as there is speculation that Southampton are set to take legal action against Atletico Madrid over the transfer of the defender.
