Arsenal are ready to make a move for Gonzalo Higuain this summer but are unwilling to pay his release clause.

Napoli’s failure to qualify for the Champions League has triggered fresh rumours of Higuain’s departure from the club with teams such as Manchester United and Arsenal linked with a move for the player.

However, Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has made it clear that to buy the Argentine his suitors must pay his release clause, which is believed be around €94.7m.

Arsenal are prepared to make a move for the player but are said to be in no mood to pay the release clause in order to prise him away from Napoli.

However, according to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport, the Gunners are ready to pay up to €60m for 27-year-old forward but won’t go beyond that figure.

Napoli have been insisting that the release clause must be paid and if they stick to their stance, Higuain is likely to remain at the San Paolo next season.

Higuain clocked up 58 appearances for Napoli last season, scoring 29 goals and providing eleven assists for his team-mates.

His contract with Napoli runs until the summer of 2018.
