Dutch coach Raymond Verheijen has lashed out at former Celtic defender Alan Stubbs for his coaching methods.

The former Celtic and Everton man took over as the head coach of Scottish outfit Hibernian last year.

Under his tutelage Hibs finished second in the Scottish second tier last season and they entered the Premiership playoffs at the semi-final stage, but lost 2–1 on aggregate to Rangers.

Stubbs has taken his Hibernian squad to Spain for pre-season conditioning as he looks to launch another bid for promotion to the Scottish Premiership next season.

The former Celtic man will make his squad go through a rigorous training regime, consisting of three sessions per day, in the searing heat of La Manga. Temperatures of around 30c and in excess of 30c have been forecast for the coming days.

The Hibernian boss feels his training regime will help his squad to prepare themselves better ahead of the new season.

Talking about the training regime, Stubbs was quoted as saying by the Edinburgh Evening News: “Training in the heat is the reason why we wanted to get away.

“They’ll have to work hard in the heat which will speed up their fitness. The sessions will be quality rather than quantity and will be managed to the precise minute and second.”

However, not everyone is a fan of Stubbs’ training methods and Verheijen, a respected fitness coach in the Netherlands who has worked with Guus Hiddink at international level and at club sides including Barcelona and Zenit St. Petersburg, feels the Hibernian boss is showing his lack of a coaching education.

He believes there is a big risk of players being injured because of overtraining.

The Dutchman wrote on Twitter: “The Hibernian coach Alan Stubbs is a typical example of an uneducated coach, overtraining & injuring his players.”

Verheijen is known for his outspoken views on coaching and famously attacked the Arsenal backroom staff for their methods, which he felt played a big role in causing frequent injuries to players such as Aaron Ramsey and Robin van Persie.
