Manchester United new boy Memphis Depay is hoping to emulate Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford.

With clubs such as Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain interested in him, Louis van Gaal moved in quickly to secure his signature from PSV Eindhoven earlier in the summer.

Depay was the top scorer in the Dutch league last season and played a major role in PSV ending Ajax's four-year grip on the Eredivisie title.

A lot is expected from the highly rated Dutch winger at Old Trafford and Depay’s international team-mate and Queens Park Rangers midfielder Leroy Fer believes his compatriot could be as good as former Manchester United superstar Ronaldo.

While the 21-year-old is flattered at being compared with the Portuguese legend, he feels he still has a lot of work to do reach Ronaldo’s level.

In an interview with German channel Sport1, Depay said: “It is a great feeling when I listen to other players [comparing me with Ronaldo].

“But I am just 21 and still have not reached the level of Cristiano Ronaldo.”

The Dutchman admits that the Portuguese is his hero and firmly believes that he could one day reach his levels to become one of the best players in the world.

“He is a hero for me, a role model. He can score so many goals and I hope I can reach his level some day.

“I am confident that I can be one of the best players in the world; to do that I have to believe in it and dream about it.

“I will fight for it.”
