Sol Bamba says that if he was handed the Leeds United captaincy by head coach Uwe Rosler he would be honoured, but insists he is not focused on wearing the armband.

The Ivorian centre-back, who joined the Whites on a permanent deal from Palermo earlier this summer, is considered a leading contender to be named captain by Rosler.

Bamba captained Leeds' second half side in last night's friendly draw with Harrogate, further pushing his case and winning his manager's praise.

And he would be delighted if Rosler turned to him with the armband.

Bamba told LUTV: "I'm not going to say I want it, but if I've got it I'll be happy.

"It would be a huge thing for me to be a captain of such a big club. It would be an honour and a privilege", the defender continued.

"But I'm not asking for it. If the gaffer thinks I deserve it then I'll take it with pleasure, but if it's anyone else I'll just do my job.

"It would be an honour and a pleasure, but honestly it's not what I'm after, I just want to do the best for the club, the fans and the manager."

Bamba can again push his captaincy case on Wednesday when Leeds play their next pre-season friendly, away against York City, to continue their preparations for the forthcoming Championship campaign.

The Whites have a number of tough friendly tests ahead, with games against Bundesliga pair Eintracht Frankfurt, Hoffenheim and Premier League club Everton.
