Wayne Rooney will play at Duncan Ferguson's testimonial next month, it has been confirmed by Everton.

The Manchester United and England star has agreed to make an appearance in the game at Goodison Park and is happy to have the chance to repay the former striker, to whom he feels he owes a debt for guidance early in his career.




Rooney said via Everton's Twitter feed: "I cannot think of a better way to thank Dunc for all he did for me than turning out."

Ferguson himself is delighted that the England star will be playing in his testimonial match and thanked the "wee man".
 

 

The former Everton striker commented: "I’m absolutely delighted that the wee man has agreed to play in the game."

Ferguson enjoyed two spells with Everton as a player, turning out for the Toffees between 1994 and 1998 and then again from 2000 until 2006, at which time he was at Goodison Park when Rooney was also at the club.

The Scot won the FA Cup with Everton in 1995.

Ferguson's testimonial will take place on Sunday 2nd August and see Everton take on Spanish side Villarreal.

In total, the former striker clocked up 273 appearances as an Everton player and scored 72 goals in the process.
